Cyclone Hudhud LIVE updates: Storm damages railway tracks in Andhra Pradesh

Cyclone Hudhud pounded the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha with heavy rain and winds of almost 200 kmph on Sunday, leaving 21 people dead and a trail of devastation in Visakhapatnam where the very severe storm made landfall.

Here are the latest updates:
9:30 pm: Heavy rains in the aftermath of cyclone Hudhud caused damage to tracks at a few locations in Vijayawada Division of South Central Railway (SCR).
According to the SCR, a few locations between Elamanchili-Narsingapalli-Bayyavaram Stations on Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam rail route under the division faced problems due to ruptured tracks.
Following the damage, the SCR has taken up track restoration activities on a war-footing.

9:15 pm: Over 300 houses were damaged and several persons were injured under the impact of Cyclone Hudhud as heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed parts of Jharkhand where more rains were predicted.
At least four persons were injured and around 80 houses damaged in Chaibasa, the headquarter of West Singhbhum district, and its surrounding areas.
8:15 pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Visakhapatnam on Tuesday to review the situation in the aftermath of Cyclone Hudhud that has left a trail of destruction in the area.

6:30 pm: Cyclonic storm Hudhud, which hit the Andhra Pradesh coast on Sunday, has claimed 21 lives in the state, officials said.
The worst-hit Visakhapatnam district accounts for 15 deaths. Five people were killed in Vijayanagaram district and one person died in Srikakulam district.
Prakala Prabhakar, advisor (communications) to the state government told reporters on Monday evening that majority of deaths occurred due to falling of trees.
The authorities had Sunday put the toll at 5.

6:05 pm: The picturesque port town of Visakhapatnam, a major industrial, educational and tourism hub in the east coast, is still reeling under the impact of havoc caused by the cyclonic storm Hudhud and is picking up pieces from a trail of destruction left behind by the calamity.
Under the impact of Hudhud that made a landfall on Sunday, accompanied by gusty winds and heavy rains, the city looks like a war-ravaged zone with uprooted trees, knocked down cell towers, transformers, and telephone poles lying strewn at several places.

Photo: PTI.5:15 pm: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu conducted an aerial survey to get first hand detail of the devastation caused by cyclonic storm Hudhud, while three more senior IPS officers were deputed to oversee relief and rescue operations in the affected areas.

4:30 pm: The intensity of cyclone Hudhud reduced as it moved to Chhattisgarh on Monday morning and has turned into a 'deep depression', MeT department said.
In the next six hours, its intensity will reduce further and it will turn into a 'depression' and bring rainfall in several parts of east India, it said.


3.20 pm: Trains to and from Vizag cancelled
Ministry of Railways announced trains to and from Visakhapatnam has been cancelled because of heavy rains. Visakha, Godavari, Garibrath and Duronto Express from Secunderabad and Trimula Express from Tirupati to Visakhapatnam have been cancelled today. Two special trains to be runs by South Central Railways. As part of continuous efforts to establish rail connectivity with Visakhapatanam, a special passenger train will run between Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatanam, leaving Bhubaneswar at 2pm on Monday. It will have stoppages at all stations between Palasa and Visakhapatnam.
2.50 pm: Deep depression over Chhattisgarh
The IMD in its 12.30 pm bulletin said there was a deep depression over south Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood due to cyclone Hudhud and it would moved northwards around 50 km south of Raipur.
2.48 pm: Depression to weaken in a few hours
The depression will move northwards for next 12 hours and then north-northeastwards. It would weaken into a depression during next six hours and into a well marked low pressure area during subsequent 12 hours, said IMD.

IMD said that under the influence of the cyclonic system, rainfall at many places with isolated heavy falls (6.5–12.4 cm) would occur over Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts of north Andhra Pradesh during next few hours and decrease thereafter.
Rainfall would occur at most places with isolated heavy (6.5–12.4 cm) to very heavy falls (12.5–24.4 cm) over Chhattisgarh and adjoining east Madhya Pradesh and interior Odisha during next 24 hrs and over East Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar during next 48 hours.
2.38 pm: Squally wind speed to reach 40-50 kmph
IMD said squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph would prevail up to 100 km around system centre, which includes areas of Chhattisgarh and adjoining west Odisha during next 6 hours.

Jitendra Singh, Minister of State in the PMO says: "There have been six deaths, three in Odisha and three in Andhra Pradesh. The situation is under control and all departments worked in synergy, We were pre-warned, so the damage was minimum."
02:42 pm: Tamil Nadu announces aid
Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam has announced an assistance package to cyclone-ravaged Andhra Pradesh. This package includes an aid of Rs.5 crore, electrical poles, devices and a team of highway officials to clear uprooted trees.

According to a Andhra government official, around 70 per cent of trees in Vizag have been uprooted. The airport has suffered damage, will remain non-functional for regular passenger traffic. The Vizag national highway (which is part of Chennai-Kolkata NH) has been cleared. Railways running special train from Bhubaneswar to Vizag. IMD equipment at Kailasgiri in Vizag has got destroyed. 01:16 pm: NDRF presses 42 teams for rescue and relief
NDRF has pressed 42 rescue and relief teams to undertake the swift relief and rescue operations in vulnerable places of different parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. NDRF teams are engaged in clearing roads by removing trees and other obstacles scattered due to Hudhud. So far, 13,256 (11,853 in Andhra Pradesh and 1403 in Odishas) persons have been evacuated to safer places. Relief work is in progress.

Since Vizag airport is not functional because of the heavy damages it sustained, Rajahmundry airport is being used as the base at the moment. If the Vizag airport does not get operational by tomorrow, PM Modi will land in Rajahmundry and go on an aerial survey.

Hudhud has now moved over to south Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood, said an IMD bulletin released at 7.30 am. It was located 90km NW of Jagdalpur and 190km south of Raipur.

9:10 am: Death toll 8, 4 lakh evacuated
According to preliminary assessment, the death toll is eight, five in AP (three in Visakhapatnam and one each in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts) and three in Odisha.  A little over four lakh people, about 250,000 in four districts of AP and 156,000 in nine districts of Odisha, were evacuated to relief camps.

8:58 am: Hudhud to weaken gradually
Latest weather bulletin said Hudhud lay centred very close to south Chhattisgarh and adjoining southwest Odisha. It would move north-northwestwards and weaken gradually. Under the influence of the system, heavy rainfall would occur over Visakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram and Srikakulam districts of north Andhra Pradesh besides some districts of south Odisha during the next 24 hours.

Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth on Sunday briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the situation in the districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha affected by cyclonic storm Hudhud that hit the country's east coast earlier on Sunday and left six people dead, sources said.
10:39 pm: Navy to lead 'Op Lehar' to rescue people
Responding to cyclone Hudhud, the armed forces repositioned their resources to assist the civil administration to launch rescue and relief operations in the affected regions of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
The Navy has been appointed as the lead agency among the armed force to carry out relief and rescue operations which have been code-named 'Op Lehar'.

09:10 pm: Hudhud claims 3 lives in Odisha, 1.56 lakh people evacuatedAt least three persons died in Odisha as the very severe cyclonic storm Hudhud hit the coast in north Andhra Pradesh at noon, triggering heavy rain and gusty winds in the southern and coastal parts.
About 1.56 lakh people were evacuated to safety ahead of the storm making landfall but three deaths have been reported in the state under the impact of Hudhud, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) PK Mohapatra said, adding that the system was still active over Odisha and was likely to cross over to Chhattisgarh later tonight.

Responding to cyclone Hudhud, the armed forces on Sunday repositioned their resources to assist the civil administration to launch rescue and relief operations in the affected regions of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
The Andhra Sub-Area of Army has deployed four teams of its personnel at Vishakhapatnam and as many teams at Srikakulam (Tikli and Echerla). Army has also established a Disaster Management Cell at Air Defence College, Gopalpur.

A 40-year-old man who had risked his life to save seven women and children from meeting a watery grave in a crocodile-infested rivulet during the evacuation drive ahead of Cyclone Hudhud, died on Sunday sending shockwaves across far-flung Okilopala and Satabhaya villages in Odisha's Kendrapara district.

Cyclone Hudhud, which made a landfall in Andhra Pradesh this noon, lost its intensity by evening as it moved further 60 km northwest of Visakhapatnam, the IMD said.
Hudhud, which was so far a very severe cyclonic storm has now converted into a severe cyclone. Its speed is now limited to 100-110 kmph, said M Mahapatra, scientist at the Cyclone Warning Division of IMD.

Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa said on Sunday said that nearly 90,000 people have been shifted to relief camps in four cyclone Hudhud-hit districts.
Chinarajappa, from the cyclone control room set up at the Kakinada collectorate said that so far, 90,000 people from Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and East Godavari districts have been moved to relief camps.

East Coast Railway and South Central Railway have cancelled over 70 trains while short terminating or diverting many others in view of cyclonic storm Hudhud, which is set to cross Andhra Pradesh coast on Sunday.

In an emergency high-level meeting to review preparedness for cyclone Hudhud, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday asked officials to ensure that rescue and relief operations proceed smoothly and people are informed about the cyclone on a real-time basis.
Modi also asked Home Minister Rajnath Singh to be in touch with the Chief Ministers of the states likely to be affected by it, an official statement said.
The meeting was attended by the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the PM, the Home Secretary, the Defence Secretary and other senior officials from the Indian Meteorological Departmentand and the PMO.
Modi was briefed on evacuation and other precautionary and preparatory measures being undertaken for coping with the cyclone. (PTI)

Over two lakh people living in and around the vulnerable coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have been evacuated with Cyclone 'Hudhud' set to hit the two states on Sunday with winds gusting up to 195 kmph.
The Andhra government has made arrangements to evacuate 5,14,725 people in all, officials said, while the Army and the Navy have kept their personnel on stand-by for rescue and relief operations.
In Odisha, the state government on Saturday began evacuating people from vulnerable areas to minimise casualties. (PTI)

The National Crisis Management Committee on Saturday took stock of the preparedness of various state and central government agencies in view of Cyclone 'Hudhud.' The meeting was chaired by Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth and it took stock of the relief and rescue measures put in place in both the states after discussing the subject with the Chief Secretaries of the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The maximum sustained surface wind speed of Hudhud cyclone will be ranging between 170-180 kmph gusting to 180 kmph on landfall, the Indian Meteorological Department has said.
 4.21 pm: Cyclone to hit Visakhapatnam at forenoon tomorrow
The Indian Meteorological Department in its 2.30 pm bulletin said the cyclone was around 260 km southeast of
Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and around 360 km south-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha. The system will cross the Andhra Pradesh coast by forenoon of Sunday, October 12.
 3.23 pm: Waves could rise up to 30 feet, says Joint Typhoon Warning Center
Joint Typhoon Warning Center has issued this warning for Hudhud:
Tropical Cyclone Hudhud (TC 03B), located approximately 150 nm southeast of Visakhapatnam has tracked westward at 06 knots over the past six hours.
Animated enhanced infrared satellite imagery depicts a consolidating system with a 9-nm eye, therefore, there is good confidence in the initial position. A 110437z metop-b89ghz image indicates a banding feature over the southern semi-circle.
The initial intensity is assessed at 105 knots based on dvorak intensity estimates ranging from 102 to 115 knots.
TC 03B is tracking along the southwestern periphery of the subtropical ridge (STR) and is forecast to make landfall near TAU 24, then begin re-curving poleward along the western periphery of the STR, which is forecast to re-orient as a deep midlatitude trough deepens over northern india.
TC 03B is forecast to continue intensifying prior to landfall, and should peak near 115 knots.
Thereafter, the system will weaken rapidly over land and dissipate by TAU 72. Maximum significant wave height at 110600z is 30 feet.

The cyclone will make landfall at an estimated speed of 170-180km/hour, IMD Director General L.S. Rathore told Headlines Today. "Cyclone has developed an eye.It has also come under radar now. It is moving at a speed of 10 kmph towards the Indian coast."

The storm is likely to raise 14 meter high waves in the ocean. Another forecast said the cyclone could raise waves of up to 30 feet.

Cyclone Hudhud: Visakhapatnam airport hit hard; train services to resume | hudhud cyclone

Port city Visakhapatnam is slowly limping back to normalcy, a day after Cyclone Hudhud hammered in at with wind speed of up to 195kmph.
Hudhud has moved inland is now a deep depression centred over south Chhattisgarh. Wind speed has also decreased considerably but heavy rains are likely to continue over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Telangana, south Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, east Uttar Pradesh ands parts of Maharashtra will also receive rain fall in the next 24 hours.
The Centre is keeping a close watch. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Have been constantly taking updates on Cyclone Hudhud. Spoke to AP CM. Will visit Visakhapatnam tomorrow and take stock of the situation.”
Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to CMs of Bihar, Jharkhand,MP, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal to take stock of the situation.
“The States seem to be prepared for any eventuality arising from the impact of 'Hudhud' that is expected to bring heavy rains,” Singh posted on Twitter.
With the eye of the storm crossing the coast near Visakhapatnam, the teeming city of over two million people bore the brunt of its wrath. With no drinking water, milk and other essential commodities, people are facing severe hardships.
Communication and electricity lines are down in major parts of the city. Toppled trees, broken glass are strewn on the streets even as the district administration has begun operations on a war footing to clear the mess.
The Vizag airport that operates from naval airbase INS Dega bore the brunt of the cyclone. Strong gales damaged the roof of the airport building and flood water had entered the runway, forcing the authorities to suspend all operations, yesterday. While runway operations resumed today, the airport terminal, which has suffered serious damage, may require extensive repair before it becomes fully operational again. Visakhapatnam airport is the biggest domestic and international airport in Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, the East Coast Railways (ECoR) is running a passenger special train between Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam as part of its efforts to restablish connectivity between the two stations.
The special train will stop at all stations between Palasa and Visakhapatnam, ECoR release said.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is in Visakhapathnam to access the damage and direct relief and restoration work in the region. He has demanded that Cyclone Hudhud be declared a national calamity and asked the Centre release Rs 2000 crore as interim relief.
Andhra government is focusing on bringing life back to normal in the districts of Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram which bore the brunt of the cyclonic fury. The government said that district officials, heads of departments and every government employee would be on field for relief, restoration and rehabilitation works.
Meanwhile, the death toll in cyclone-related incidents has risen to 21 in Andhra Pradesh as per Special Commissioner, State Disaster Management Authority, K Hymavathi.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will hold a meeting in Delhi today to access the situation. The Indian Navy is also assisting the operations with a P 8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft, based in Chennai, expected to carry out damage assessment of the coastal areas hit by the cyclone.
Indian army personnel are present in the affected area to assist in relief work.
A little over four lakh people--about 250,000 in four districts of AP and 156,000 in nine districts of Odisha--were evacuated to relief camps before Cyclone Hudhud made landfall.
